Obviously, you should stop short of making snap judgments or pigeonholing people. However, it’s still important to pay attention to some of the more subtle cues and patterns that reveal aspects of their personality.
1. Their level of self-awareness.
Pay attention to how they talk about themselves. Do they ramble on about their accomplishments, or do they share anecdotes that reveal their flaws and vulnerabilities? Self-aware people are comfortable acknowledging their strengths and weaknesses, and they don’t feel the need to constantly brag or put on a show. They’re able to laugh at themselves and have a realistic understanding of their own limitations.
2. Their emotional intelligence.
Notice how they react to your emotions and other people’s in general. Do they seem empathetic and understanding, or do they dismiss or invalidate feelings? Emotionally intelligent people are attuned to the emotional landscape around them, and they know how to respond in a way that creates connection and understanding. They’re good listeners, offer support when needed, and know how to de-escalate tense situations.
3. Their sense of humour.
Laughter is a powerful indicator of compatibility and connection. Pay attention to what makes them laugh and how they use humour. Do they crack self-deprecating jokes, tell witty anecdotes, or use humour to lighten the mood? Their sense of humour can reveal their worldview, values, and how they cope with life’s challenges. It can also be a sign of intelligence and creativity.
4. Their listening skills.
Are they actively engaged in the conversation, or are they constantly interrupting or checking their phone? Good listeners make eye contact, nod along, and ask thoughtful questions. They show genuine interest in what you have to say and make you feel heard and understood. Their listening skills can indicate their level of respect, empathy, and interest in building a meaningful connection.
5. Their body language.
Non-verbal cues can speak volumes. Pay attention to their posture, gestures, and facial expressions. Do they maintain open body language, or do they cross their arms and seem closed off? Do they make eye contact and smile, or do they avoid your gaze and fidget nervously? Their body language can reveal their level of comfort, confidence, and engagement in the interaction.
6. Their choice of words.
The words people choose can reveal their values, education, and even their emotional state. Do they use colourful language, peppered with slang and colloquialisms, or do they speak more formally and precisely? Do they use inclusive language, or do they make assumptions based on stereotypes? Their choice of words can offer insights into their personality, background, and how they perceive the world.
7. Their energy level.
Some people exude an infectious energy, while others have a more calm and reserved demeanour. Pay attention to their overall vibe. Do they seem enthusiastic and engaged, or are they lethargic and disengaged? Their energy level can indicate their passion, motivation, and overall approach to life. It can also affect the dynamic of your interaction and leave you feeling energised or drained.
8. Their curiosity.
Do they ask questions about you, your interests, and your experiences? Curious people are eager to learn and explore new ideas. They’re not afraid to delve deeper into a conversation and challenge their own assumptions. Their curiosity can indicate their intelligence, open-mindedness, and willingness to step outside their comfort zone.
9. Their level of respect.
Pay attention to how they treat you (and everyyone else). Do they interrupt, talk over you, or dismiss your opinions? Respectful people listen attentively, value your input, and speak to you in a polite and considerate manner. They show kindness and empathy, even if they disagree with your views. Their level of respect can be a strong indicator of their character and how they’ll treat you in the long run.
10. Their attention to detail.
Notice the little things. Do they remember your name, make eye contact, and offer a firm handshake? Are they well-groomed and put-together, or do they appear dishevelled and unkempt? Their attention to detail can reveal their level of conscientiousness, self-discipline, and respect for themselves and everyone else.
11. Their honesty and authenticity.
Pay attention to their overall demeanour. Do they seem genuine and authentic, or do they come across as fake and insincere? Honest people speak from the heart, own their mistakes, and don’t try to be someone they’re not. They’re comfortable in their own skin and don’t feel the need to impress or manipulate people. Their authenticity can be a refreshing change and a sign of a trustworthy and reliable person.

They inspire and motivate people with their enthusiasm and passion for life. Their passion can be a sign of their drive, ambition, and commitment to living a fulfilling and meaningful life.
13. Their generosity and willingness to help.
Do they offer to help you with something, even if it’s just holding the door open or offering a piece of gum? Generous people are naturally inclined to give and share. They’re not afraid to go out of their way to help people, even if it means sacrificing their own time or resources. Their generosity can be a sign of their compassion, empathy, and willingness to contribute to other people’s lives in a positive way.

Do they dress in a way that’s appropriate for the occasion, or do they seem oblivious to social norms? Do they express themselves through their clothing choices, or do they blend in with the crowd? Their sense of style can offer clues about their creativity, confidence, and attention to detail.
15. Their overall vibe.

Trust your intuition. If something feels off, it might be a sign to proceed with caution. On the other hand, if you feel a positive connection, it could be the start of a beautiful friendship or relationship.
