Going through a breakup is a miserable experience, even if you know it was for the best.

Ending a relationship with someone you truly cared about at some point (and maybe still do) is heartbreaking, and figuring out how to rebuild your life without them, especially if you were together for ages, can seem impossible. However, try not to let it overwhelm you. Instead, think practically and once you’ve had a good cry, start to do these things.

1. Allow yourself to feel and express your emotions.

It’s crucial to acknowledge and process your feelings after a breakup. Don’t bottle up your emotions or try to push them aside. Instead, give yourself permission to cry, feel angry, or experience whatever emotions crop up. Journaling, talking to a friend, or expressing yourself through art can be helpful outlets for these intense feelings.

2. Create a new routine to establish stability.

After a split, your daily life can feel chaotic and unfamiliar. Establish a new routine to bring structure back into your days. Maybe you can set regular sleep and wake times, plan healthy meals, or start scheduling time for exercise and self-care activities. Having a predictable schedule can provide a sense of normalcy and control when everything feels so chaotic.

3. Reconnect with old friends and strengthen your support network.

Reach out to friends you may have lost touch with during your relationship. Rebuilding and strengthening your support network is essential for emotional healing. Plan casual get-togethers, phone calls, or video chats to reconnect. Surrounding yourself with supportive people can provide comfort, distraction, and valuable perspectives as you get back on your feet.

4. Rediscover your personal interests and hobbies.

Use this opportunity to reconnect with interests you may have neglected during your relationship. Whether it’s reading, painting, hiking, or learning a new skill, engaging in activities you enjoy can boost your mood and self-esteem. Exploring hobbies also helps you rediscover your identity outside of the relationship and provides a sense of purpose and fulfilment.

5. Take care of your physical health through exercise and nutrition.

Physical health significantly impacts emotional well-being. Engage in regular exercise, which releases endorphins and can help alleviate stress and anxiety. Focus on eating nutritious meals to fuel your body properly. Avoid using alcohol or comfort eating as coping mechanisms, as these can negatively affect your health and emotions in the long run.

6. Set boundaries with your ex-partner to promote healing.

Establish clear boundaries with your former partner to give yourself space to heal. This might mean limiting or cutting off contact for a period, unfollowing them on social media, or setting rules about communication if you have shared responsibilities. Respecting these boundaries helps prevent reopening emotional wounds and allows you to focus on moving forward.

7. Practice self-compassion and avoid self-blame.

Be kind to yourself right now, and avoid falling into the trap of self-blame or dwelling on “what ifs”. Recognise that relationships are complex, and breakups often result from a combination of factors. Treat yourself with the same compassion you would offer a friend going through a similar situation. Remember, healing takes time, and it’s okay to have good days and bad days.

8. Declutter your space and remove painful reminders.

Create a fresh environment by removing items that trigger painful memories. Pack away photos, gifts, and other reminders of your ex-partner. Consider rearranging your living space or redecorating to give your home a new feel. A physical change can help create a sense of a new beginning and reduce everyday emotional triggers.

9. Focus on personal growth and self-improvement.

Use this time to invest in yourself. Identify areas of personal growth you’d like to work on, whether it’s developing new skills, furthering your education, or working on aspects of your personality. Set achievable goals and work towards them. Focusing on self-improvement can boost your confidence and provide a sense of progress when you feel like your world’s falling apart.

10. Explore new places and experiences to broaden your perspective.

Break out of your comfort zone by exploring new places or trying new experiences. This could be as simple as visiting a new café or park in your area, or as adventurous as planning a solo trip. New experiences can help shift your focus, create fresh memories, and remind you of the many possibilities life holds beyond your past relationship.

11. Practice gratitude to shift your focus towards positivity.

Cultivate a habit of gratitude to help shift your mindset towards more positive aspects of your life. Each day, try to identify three things you’re grateful for, no matter how small. It sounds silly, but doing this can help balance out negative emotions and remind you of the good things in your life, even during tough times.

12. Learn from the relationship to grow and move forward.

Reflect on your past relationship to discover the lessons it has to teach you. Consider what worked well, what didn’t, and what you might do differently in future relationships. Honest reflection isn’t about assigning blame, but about personal growth and understanding. Use these insights to help you make healthier choices and build stronger relationships in the future.

13. Engage in activities that boost your self-esteem.

Participate in activities that make you feel good about yourself. This could be volunteering, mastering a new skill, or completing a challenging task. Accomplishing goals, no matter how small, can significantly boost your self-esteem and remind you of your capabilities. Celebrate your achievements and acknowledge your progress, however minor it may seem.

14. Create a vision for your future to inspire hope.

Take time to envision the future you want for yourself, whether that’s by creating a vision board, writing out your goals, or even just daydreaming about possibilities. Having a positive vision for your future can provide motivation and hope during difficult times. Remember, a breakup can be an opportunity for new beginnings and personal reinvention.

15. Practice mindfulness to stay grounded in the present.

Mindfulness techniques can help you stay grounded in the present moment, rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Try simple meditation exercises, deep breathing techniques, or mindful walking. These practices can help reduce anxiety, improve emotional regulation, and promote a sense of calm amidst the turmoil of a breakup.

16. Celebrate small victories in your healing journey.

Recognise and celebrate the small steps you take in your healing process. It could be the first day you didn’t cry, a week of sticking to your new routine, or feeling genuinely happy for a moment. Acknowledging these small victories can provide encouragement and motivation to continue moving forward. Remember, healing is a process, and every step counts, no matter how small it may seem.
