However, just because you’re related to someone doesn’t mean they should treat you like a doormat. If they refuse to respect your boundaries, act as if your “no” is always a “yes” for them, and generally walk all over you, you have to take back control and put them in their place. It’s not easy, but here’s how to do it.

1. Recognise the patterns of behaviour.

Before making changes, take note of the situations where your family crosses the line. Are they asking for too much of your time or dismissing your feelings? Identifying these patterns is the first step toward addressing them. Once you see the recurring themes, it’s easier to know where to focus your efforts.
