Manners are about a lot more than just remembering to say please and thank you, though those are definitely the basics.
Real courtesy is really about how you carry yourself in the world and whether you actually give a toss about the people sharing the space with you. It seems like common decency is in pretty short supply lately, with more people acting like they’re the only ones on the planet. Most of us try to be a bit considerate, but you’ll always find someone who has zero qualms about being a total nuisance in public. When people ignore these basic social rules, they’re basically saying their own minor convenience matters more than everyone else’s peace of mind.
1. They talk loudly on their mobile phones in quiet spaces.
There’s nothing quite like trying to have a peaceful coffee or a quiet train journey only to be forced into hearing every detail of a stranger’s life. Some people seem to think the entire world is their personal office and will happily shout into their mobile for twenty minutes straight. They’re completely oblivious to the fact that everyone around them is cringing or trying to block them out. It’s a massive intrusion on public space, and honestly, nobody wants to hear about your weekend plans or your latest work drama while they’re trying to read a book.
2. They leave their rubbish behind in public areas.
Nothing shows a lack of respect for the world quite like dropping your litter and just walking away. Whether it’s an empty crisp packet on a park bench or a coffee cup left on a bus, it’s a lazy habit that forces someone else to clean up after you. We’ve all seen the mess left behind after a sunny day in the park, and it’s a proper shame that some people think the environment is just their personal bin. It takes two seconds to find a bin, so leaving it for other people to deal with is just plain rude.
3. They queue-jump without a second thought.
In the UK, queuing is basically a national pastime, and we’ve got a very specific set of unspoken rules about it. That’s why it’s so infuriating when someone decides those rules don’t apply to them and waltzes right to the front. Whether they’re pretending they didn’t see the line or they just think their time is more valuable than yours, it’s a massive sign of arrogance. We’re all busy, and we’ve all been waiting patiently, so acting like you’re above the system is a surefire way to get everyone’s back up.
4. They play music or videos without headphones in shared spaces.
We’ve all been on a bus where someone thinks it’s perfectly fine to blast their latest TikTok finds or a tinny rap song without using headphones. It’s incredibly selfish to force your taste in entertainment on a captive audience. Shared spaces only work if everyone is a bit mindful of the noise they’re making. If you wouldn’t do it in a library, you probably shouldn’t be doing it on public transport either. It’s a total disregard for the comfort of everyone else who’s just trying to get from A to B in peace.
5. They let doors slam in people’s faces instead of holding them.
Holding a door open for the person behind you is such a small, easy gesture, yet some people act like it’s a massive chore. Instead of a quick glance back to see if someone’s following, they just walk through and let the door swing shut right in your path. It’s a minor thing, but it’s a clear indicator of how much someone is paying attention to the people around them. Taking half a second to be helpful makes a world of difference in how a day feels, and ignoring it just feels cold.
6. They smoke in non-smoking areas or near entrances.
Despite the signs being everywhere and the social norms being pretty well established, some smokers still act like the rules are more like suggestions. They’ll light up right next to a hospital entrance or under a shelter where people are trying to stay dry, forcing everyone else to breathe in their second-hand smoke. It’s not about being the fun police; it’s about the fact that your habit shouldn’t be someone else’s problem. Moving a few yards away to a designated spot is the bare minimum of being a decent neighbour.
7. They take up excessive space on public transport.
We’ve all seen the space-hoggers who take up two seats with their bags or sit with their legs spread so wide that nobody else can fit on the bench. On a busy commute, this is a proper lack of manners. Your bag doesn’t need its own seat when there are people standing in the aisles. It shows a complete lack of awareness for the fact that everyone is just trying to get home and deserves a bit of comfort. It’s a small power play that just makes the journey more stressful for everyone else.
8. They talk during films at the cinema.
The whole point of going to the cinema is to get lost in a film, which is impossible when the people behind you won’t stop chatting. Some people treat the theatre like their own house, providing a running commentary or checking their phones every five minutes. It’s a total waste of money for everyone else who’s paid to hear the movie, not your opinion on the lead actor’s haircut. If you can’t go two hours without a chat or a scroll, stay home and watch it on Netflix instead.
9. They let their kids run riot in restaurants.
While everyone knows children can be a bit of a handful, there’s a line between a fussy toddler and a kid being allowed to sprint between tables while people are eating. Some parents seem to switch off the moment they sit down, letting their kids scream or get under the feet of the waiting staff without saying a word. It’s not fair on the other diners or the staff who are trying to do their jobs safely. Managing your family in public is part of the deal when you go out for a meal.
10. They scroll through their phone while you’re trying to talk to them.
There’s nothing that says I don’t care about what you’re saying quite like someone pulling out their phone mid-conversation. In a world where we’re always connected, giving someone your full attention has become a bit of a rare gift. When you’re constantly checking your notifications or scrolling through social media while a mate is talking to you, it’s incredibly dismissive. It makes the other person feel like they’re just background noise to whatever is happening on your screen.
11. They’re rude to service staff.
You can tell everything you need to know about someone’s character by how they treat people in the service industry. Failing to say please or thank you to the person serving your coffee or checking your bags is a sign of someone who thinks they’re better than others. These people are working hard to make your life easier, and the absolute least you can do is show them a bit of basic courtesy. Being dismissive or snappy with staff isn’t just rude; it’s a massive red flag.
12. They tailgate or drive aggressively on the road.
The road is a shared space, but some drivers act like they’re in a private race. Tailgating, cutting people off, or refusing to let someone merge isn’t just annoying; it’s properly dangerous. This kind of aggressive behaviour creates a massive amount of stress for everyone else and shows a total lack of concern for anyone’s safety. Just because you’re in a hurry doesn’t mean you get to bully other road users. A bit of patience and a simple wave goes a long way when you’re behind the wheel.
13. They interrupt people mid-conversation.
We all know that person who can’t wait for you to finish a sentence before they’re jumping in with their own story. They’re not actually listening to you; they’re just waiting for their turn to speak. It’s incredibly frustrating and makes any conversation feel like a one-way street. Good manners involve actually taking in what the other person is saying rather than just steering every topic back to yourself. It’s about a bit of give and take, not a competition to see who can talk the most.
14. They don’t cover their mouth when coughing or sneezing.
In a world that’s been through a global pandemic, you’d think people would have figured out how to cover their mouths by now. Yet, you still see people coughing or sneezing into the open air on crowded buses or in shops without a second thought. It’s a brilliant way to spread germs and shows a total lack of regard for anyone else’s health. It takes zero effort to use a tissue or your elbow, so being a walking health hazard is just plain gross. No one wants your cold, mate!
15. They block pathways or entrances while chatting.
It’s lovely to run into a friend and have a catch-up, but doing it right in the middle of a busy pavement or in a shop doorway is a proper nuisance. You’ll see groups of people standing in a huddle, completely oblivious to the crowd of people trying to squeeze past them. Public pathways are for moving, so if you want a long chat, move to one side or find a bench. Forcing everyone else to navigate around you like an obstacle course is just poor awareness.
16. They use their phones in quiet zones or during performances.
Whether you’re at the theatre, a concert, or even a school play, there’s always someone who can’t put their phone away. The bright glow of a screen in a darkened room is incredibly distracting for everyone sitting nearby. It ruins the atmosphere and shows a total lack of respect for the performers and the audience members who are actually trying to enjoy the show. Unless you’re a surgeon on call, your messages can definitely wait until the interval.
